Ticonderoga Historic Portage Canoe Race

Ticonderoga, NY

September 4, 2004

Feedback is appreciated. Do you have any ideas to improve the race with reference to the section in Lake George, the portage, or the La Chute, or the weekend? jim@designden.us

Suggestions Made for Next Year
  • Use green channel marker buoys as the start line of the 7.5 race.
  • Add a 2 mile loop in Lake George to the 7.5 mile race and use only if wind conditions warrent.
  • Use the covered bridge in the park as the finish line for all classes. (falls were too loud, couldn't see finishers, finishers couldn't see finish line)
  • Set up the registration for the 4 mile race by bridge. (more convenient for racers, grass for sitting)
  • Make the 4.0 mile race in the La Chute no-class specific. Any canoe can race: rec. comp, pro, stock, kayak. Awards to finishing place and awards to all.
  • I would agree that a longer race would be nice.  I personally would prefer going out onto Lake Champlain for a few extra miles.  I suspect you could get more hardcore racers with a race 10-15 miles long.  Lake George can be very rough unless the race is held early in the day & even then is not predictable.  Lake Champlain, I think, is fairly narrow & less wind affected. It would also be better to have the portage early.  You don't have the problem of needing water jugs before the portage & therefore don't carry the extra weight.  It is easy to pick up your water jugs in the park just before the La Chute put-in.

The Ticonderoga Historic Portage Canoe Race was contested by 25 competitors in a variety of boats, on Saturday of Labor Day weekend, September 4th. This event featured a variety of classes over two courses, There was a marathon racing canoe and kayak course which was 7.5 miles in length, racing down the channel of Lake George, onto the 1.3 mile portage through Ticonderoga, and down and back on the La Chute River. A recreational canoe and kayak event was held on the La Chute River, without the portage. This event was 4 miles in length and started in Bicentennial Park. These races retraced the route taken by fur traders, Native Americans, and invading soldiers as they traveled between Lake George and Lake Champlain The town of Ticonderoga and the Bicentennial Committee held the race as part of the town's Bicentennial Celebration.
